Part 2 of our Rankings Tutorial: Expectations vs Reality
Now some of you may be upset that we publish this data, but it's important for all coaches to be aware of this factoring. Many postseason playoff selections are seeded based off Maxpreps rankings. Unless your team does what Freeman Scoring expects you to do, your ranking will suffer. Even in a tough loss, your team may rise in the rankings if you perform better than the Freeman Scoring data expected you to do.
So pay attention to the information provided, and bookmark the CalPreps link, so that you can prepare effectively and make the game decisions with all the factors in mind. The NHFCS is not advocating for teams heartlessly running up the score by more than a 50 point margin, and we know that providing playing time to all your dedicated players is important in so many ways. And rest assured that the Freeman Scoring deliberately encoded factoring which diminishes any advantage for piling on further than 50 points more than your inferior opponent For further explanation of how a computer ranking works, please read our recent blog post; The Anatomy Of A Computer Polling Machine.
It's reasonable for a player or coach to feel frustrated when they're having an undefeated season and winning many games by huge margins; yet they somehow can't move into the upper echelon of the Homeschool Rankings Chart. The cold hard reality is that much of the potential of this year's teams was determined long ago when the football schedule was being created Your team can only attain a ranking relative to the highest rated opponent you will play this year.
At this point it's just important to focus on what is within a team's capacity to impact. Perhaps the prayer of the American Theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, is appropriate:
Courage to change the things which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right, if I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen.
And again, we're not trying to discourage anyone by posting computer predictions, and we don't want to cause any players to give up before the game even starts. But if your team is suffering a deficit in the 3rd quarter, yet doing better than the computers projected, then take heart and press through! You can experience a huge rating boost by finishing strong late in the game.
