Growth

Homeschool opportunities  to play football have grown from just a handful of teams early in the century; to well over 100 teams by 2011.

About half of the current varsity homeschool teams play 11-man football. An equal amount opt to play 6, 8, or 9-man formats; depending on the regional popularity of formats. There are organized conferences in Michigan, Texas, the mid Atlantic Coast, and the Southeast states.

Division 1 (11 man standard)
The majority of the registered homeschool teams are playing standard 11-man varsity, using a standardized national set of high school rules. Texas high schools generally play by a slightly different set of rules which bring in aspects of professional American football.

Division 2  (6, 8, & 9 man)
Texas has a very developed 6-man format and many top teams play a highly competitive, speed dependent game.

Nationally, 8-man is more pervasive than 6 or 9-man. The official rules of the small squads usually dictate an 80yd field of scrimmage.

Big Game Action

Eligibility
This organization is intended to promote and assist teams who focus on the home-schooled athlete. Since many teams have incurred a difficulty in filling out a complete, safe, and necessary roster, most of them have invited other high school athletes who's current educational choices do not provide a varsity tackle football team.
We promote all teams who have a tradition of inviting the homeschool athletes to join, but our rankings and recognitions will focus on those teams which are identified as having mostly home-based* students on their roster.
   To receive comparable rankings:

  1. Any team which withholds an accurate varsity game result will be suspended from the rankings until the next Maxpreps ranking update.

  2. Any team with an active player who is; (A) a post-highschool athlete or (B) one not making ernest progress toward a high school completion (a drop-out); for any varsity competition, will be suspended until the next ranking season.
  3. Any team with a majority of active players who are not home educated*, will be removed from the rankings until the next ranking season.
* Home Educated is basically defined as receiving most or all of one's current common secondary education in a home setting, at the oversight of his parents or guardians.

Communication
Homeschool sports teams rely on the internet for most of their communications, especially for helping families find out about the team and getting in touch with leadership. It is essential that varsity homeschool  sports teams utilize the best tools for communicating with sports media, other teams, and fans.
  •  Maxpreps provides a vast array of free and effective tools for teams to tabulate stats, connect with other teams, take part in homeschool rankings, and connect with media. Maxpreps provides athletes with ways to get the attention of college scouts.
  • Facebook provides the most effective social media format for connecting with fans and the community at large. Its a great place for parents to post game photos and learn of last-minute team news.
  • Team websites are an essential and permanent part of the homeschool sports organization. Team forms, organizational details, and team history are helpful to families who are looking for athletic opportunities for their student athletes.  It is the essential brochure for growing your organization.
